At the weekend I had a play with the design of the site and I am really keen for some feedback. I lifted the colour pallet from FlatUIColors.com and I took away the gradients, background images and drop shadows, dropped the serif font styles and anything I could reasonably deem clutter or unnecessary. What I set out to achieve is:
- Make the site load much faster (which is good for SEO polishing as well as for mobile browsing)
- Up the contrast between text and backgrounds (which is good for accessibility)
- Do something constructive on a sunday before the wife wakes up
- I also put in AddThis smart layers too as a better and responsive sharing mechanism but that will be a whole other post (coming up very soon)
This is what the site looked like before:
What do you reckon? Let me know what you think about the colours, the layout the menu the links – have a look on your phone and let me know if anything is weird – how’s the text size? – too much scrolling? – what about the footer? too many links? not enough?
Remember, the only kind of criticism that doesn’t make you a better writer is dishonest criticism. That, and someone telling you that you have weird shoulders.
